The first Green Lanes Allotment open day of the year took place on Saturday 9th May and things were kicked off in style, as the sun shone down, the plots were looking their best, and visitors dropped in all afternoon to enjoy the event.

As always, the event was held in partnership with the Green Lanes Allotment Association and members of the public were given a chance to come along, meet plot holders and organisers, and find out more about how they can get involved at the allotment. Whether visitors had been thinking about taking on a plot of their own, or were just curious to see what goes on behind the gates, there was plenty to see and chat about.

There was also no shortage of treats on the day. Visitors could pick up homemade cakes and muffins, while elsewhere there were plants and seeds on offer straight from the plots on site, with every penny raised going back into maintaining the allotments.

Hatfield Town Council representatives were on site throughout the afternoon to answer questions about allotment memberships and to share information about other Town Council services. The council’s Coffee Zone van was also on hand to keep everyone topped up with refreshments.

Hatfield Town Mayor, Councillor Mick Wise, also popped down to visit, spending time meeting plot holders and guests and drawing the raffle prizes. He then presented the Best New Tenants awards to Toby Perrett and Paula Piper, with Kadi Kuuskmae Perry taking home the runner-up certificate. Congratulations to them all on a brilliant season so far!

A huge thank you to the Green Lanes Allotment Association, all the plot holders who opened up their patches for the day, and everyone who came along to support the event.
The next open day will be held in September. Keep an eye on the Town Council website and our social channels for the date and full details closer to the time.
