On Saturday, 10th August, the Green Lanes Allotment Association hosted its annual Open Day event, bringing together a vibrant community of allotment plot owners for a day of celebration for the achievements they have made in the past year. The event provided an opportunity for plot owners to reflect on the successes of the past year, exchange stories, share tips, and get to know fellow members within their community.
The allotments saw many of its members in attendence, as stalls were set up offering a variety of cakes and wonderful, specially made bug hotels, bird feeders, and planters. With the sun burning overhead, Hatfield Town Council staff were on hand, ensuring that everyone stayed refreshed and hydrated throughout the hot afternoon, serving a selection of hot and cold drinks.

For the main event of the afternoon, Deputy Mayor of Hatfield, Councillor Mick Wise, joined Maria and Bill Brogden in judging the annual Best Plot and Most Improved Plot competitions. This friendly contest recognises the hard work and passion that the allotment holders pour into their plots – and this year’s Best Plot award was proudly claimed by Gillian Jones, while the Most Improved Plot award went to Laura Bender Ozkan Sac, both of whom were celebrated for their outstanding efforts.

The event was not just a celebration of gardening but also a reminder of the thriving community spirit that the Green Lanes Allotments fosters. As the day drew to a close, the sense of accomplishment and unity among the plot owners was clear to see.
For those interested in joining this vibrant community, the waiting list for an allotment plot remains open. Registrations and enquiries can be made via our Allotments page.
