The toppers, now proudly displayed at Birchwood Post Office on Birchwood Avenue and South Hatfield Post Office on Bishops Rise, were unveiled this week with Hatfield Town Councillor Simon Freeman in attendance. Councillor Freeman, who helped promote the project, was present as both groups installed their creations. He spoke of “the joy in seeing the pride on the knitters’ faces as they put their work into place,” adding that there was “a real sense of Christmas cheer from passers-by who stopped to admire the fantastic effort.”

The topper at Birchwood Post Office was created by the Hopfield Knitting Group, which meets every Wednesday evening at the Hopfields Public House. Known for their community spirit and creativity, the group is raising money for Isabel Hospice through their work and said they were delighted to help brighten the season for residents.

The topper at South Hatfield Post Office marks a first for the Knit & Natter group at Hatfield Library, who meet on Wednesday mornings. This was their debut project of this kind, and members expressed great pride in seeing their collaborative work on public display.

While Hatfield Town Council offered encouragement and contributed materials to help bring the project to life, it was the creativity and dedication of the knitters themselves that truly shone through.

Inspired residents who would like to try their hand at knitting in the new year, whether by joining an existing group or even starting one of their own, are warmly encouraged to get in touch with Hatfield Town Council by emailing civic@hatfield-herts.gov.uk.
