Hatfield Town Council is pleased to announce the launch of The Butterfly Effect, a new public art project unveiled on 23 January 2026, designed to enhance public spaces across Hatfield and celebrate local creativity.

Delivered in partnership with Hertfordshire County Council, the project was developed in collaboration with local artists Angela Bull, Liberty Burrough and Magdalena Gluszak, working alongside Butterfly Conservation and Digswell Art Trust. Together, they created six butterfly-themed designs inspired by nature and community.
The primary display is located at Queensway Subway in Hatfield Town Centre, with further artworks installed across Hatfield Town Council parks throughout the town. A full list of locations can be found here.

The project is funded through the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund and supported by officers from Hatfield Town Council, Hertfordshire County Council and the Highways Authority.
Cllr Stephen Giles-Medhurst, Executive Member for Highways at Hertfordshire County Council, said:
“The Butterfly Effect is a wonderful example of how highways infrastructure can be more than just functional – it can also be creative, welcoming and inspiring… This project shows how small, thoughtful interventions can have a lasting positive impact on our public realm, while also celebrating nature, creativity and local talent.”

The launch event was attended by Andrew Lewin, MP for Welwyn Hatfield, alongside representatives from Hertfordshire County Council, Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, and the local police force.
Cllr Cathy Watson, Chair of Hatfield Town Council’s Art Project Task & Finish Group, said:
“These beautiful panels have really brought some colour and joy to Hatfield and add to the public art installations in the town centre. We look forward to working again with our partners to deliver more projects like this in the future.”
